The Markham Waxers rebounded strongly from a disappointing home opener to earn
their first victory of the 2000-2001 season by a convincing 8-3 score over St.
Michael's. The game was all Markham from the opening faceoff as the Waxers
seemed intent to erase the memories of Friday night in a hurry.
At the 4:32 mark of the first period, Mark
Menonte scored his first of two, and first Jr. A goal, on the night
when he slammed a rebound home off a Kevin
Tompkins slapshot from the slot. Just 2:14 later, while on the powerplay,
Robbie Burrows picked
up his first of the year after Jimmy
Ball and Patrick
Diotte set him up at the side of the net and he roofed it to the far
side. Then at the 11:44 mark of the first, Ryan
Taylor scored his first Jr. A goal when he deflected a Diotte point
shot and then grabbed the rebound and shoveled it home for a 3-0 lead. Tompkins
picked up the other assist on this powerplay goal.
The Waxers extended the lead to 4-0 early in the second when Menonte
intercepted a pass at the blue line and blew away the Buzzers defense streaking
in and deking the goalie for a shorthanded marker just 2:32 in to the period.
St. Mike's struck back with a 5-on-3 goal at the 7:22 mark and an even strength
goal at the 13:32 mark. Jason
Young then took a breakout pass from Taylor and went end-to-end
finishing with a hard wrist low to the far side and gave the Waxers a 5-2 lead
with only 7 seconds left in the middle frame.
Markham continued the onslaught in the third, seeing Jesse
Boucher pot his first Jr. A goal at the 5:14 mark of the third period
after a terrific passing play where all 5 skaters on the ice touched the puck
and Burrows fed Bobby Fitkin who saw a streaking Boucher for the goal on the powerplay. Then, just over 1
minute later, Taylor one-timed a centering pass from Steve
Kelly for his second goal of the night and a 7-2 lead. Menonte picked
up an assist on the play. St. Mike's struck 2 minutes later on a powerplay for
their final goal. With just under 9 minutes left in the game, Mark
Mitchell found Tompkins on the breakout who then threaded a perfect
pass to Taylor, who went in on the breakaway and deked the Buzzers' goalie to
complete his first Jr. A Hat Trick and finish the scoring.
Dan Leclair picked up
his first victory in a Waxer uniform stopping 26 shots on the evening.
