The Waxers defeated the Axemen 6-2 at Centennial Arena Friday night in a
contest that featured a little bit of everything, highlight reel goals,
ferocious open ice hits and even the odd great save.
The Waxers got on the board first when Alex
Stoyan made a great pass to James
Regan to the right side of the goal who then one-time a pass to Joel
Kitchen for the slam dunk. Later in the period Jim
Ulcar led a Markham breakout with a feed to Jason
Fraccaro who fed Greg
Chambers to make it 2-0. The Axemen would get one back before the
period would conclude.
The second period was all Markham from the opening whistle to the
intermission. Regan scored his seventh of the year on a powerplay from
Fraccaro and Brent
Pollock to make it 3-1. Midway through the frame Tom
Kotsopoulos added another powerplay goal from Kevin
Tompkins and Ulcar to lift the lead to 4-1. In the dying seconds
of the period Rob Mazzuca
and Kotsopoulos combined on a scoring play capped by Tompkins' 25th goal
of the year and the game was basically over at this point.
The third period saw both teams exchange goals, Fraccaro fed Paul
Robinson who scored a pretty highlight reel goal.
The Waxers were physically overwhelming at times this night and
received solid contributions from all, the fact that six different goal
scorers is only part of the story. Several tremendous clean open ice hits
by Ryan Steane and Mike
Stoyan set the tone for the game if there was ever any doubt.
Jeremy Wenzel
earned the victory in goal turning aside 27 of 29 shots and amongst his
stops were a couple of crowd-pleasing highlight-type stops as he continues
to demonstrate why he's the best goalie in the League right now.
The Waxers get no time to rest however as they take a short trip east
to face the crosstown rival Thornhill Rattlers who are in the midst of a
tough battle for first place. The game's at Thornhill Community Centre at
7:30pm Saturday, January 29/2000.
