The Waxers won for the sixth straight game in a row Friday night when they
defeated the Thornhill Rattlers at Centennial Arena.
The Waxers struck early and quickly to build a 2-0 lead in the opening
minutes of the contest. At the five minute mark Jimmy
Ball's blast from the point caught the corner, glancing off the
post en route, it was Ball's 10th goal of the year and Paul
Robinson drew the lone assist. Less than a minute later Greg
Chambers converted a setup pass from Jim
Ulcar to make it 2-0. Chambers the club's leading scorer all
season long registered his 26th goal of the campaign. Around the fourteen
minute mark Ryan Steane
scored his second of the year from Robbie
Burrows and Daniel
Beaudoin and the Waxers had a 3-0 lead, a lead that would get
challenged but never would the Rattlers get even again in this contest. In
the last minute of the period, while shorthanded, the Rattlers got on the
board when netminder Jeremy
Wenzel was finally beaten on a clear cut breakaway, earlier he
turned aside an earlier breakaway chance.
The second period was a scoreless affair and saw the netminding of
Wenzel play big in ensuring that the Rattlers didn't close the gap as he
turned aside fourteen shots in that frame (he had 32 saves on the night).
Just over a minute into the third period the Rattlers scored while
shorthanded to close the gap to 3-2. Four minutes later Tom
Kotsopoulos slammed home a rebound from a Kevin
Tompkins shot to restore the two goal margin and make the score
4-2. That goal would turn out to be the game winner. With just under seven
minutes remaining the Rattlers scored to close within one again, this time
at 4-3. However with four minutes remaining in the contest Robinson scored
his seventeenth of the year from Chambers and Jason
Fraccaro to ice the victory.
The Waxers earn full marks for their victory as once again they
received a solid effort from the entire lineup who continue to play an
unselfish brand of hockey. While the Rattlers drew within a single goal a
couple of times there's no question the Waxers held the margin in play for
much of the contest as they outmuscled the smaller Rattlers. And once
again when the defense broke down the rock in net, Wenzel was solid when
called upon and continues to prove that he's the number one goaltender in
the League.
The Waxers get no rest and take on the North York Rangers Saturday
night at North York Centennial in a potential first round playoff preview.
The Rangers are sure to be in a mood for revenge after dropping a 9-4
decision to the Wexford Raiders.
