The Markham Waxers started off the year 2000 on the right note with a dominant performance in Aurora Sunday night winning by a 6-2 score. The Waxers played their fourth strong game in a row going back to the final weekend of hockey in December and appeared to have taken the two week layoff extremely well.

Markham opened the scoring at the sixteen minute mark of the first when a James Regan dump in eluded the Tigers netminder and Joel Kitchen banged the puck in to the open net. Then, with just one second left in the period, Dan Beaudoin grabbed a loose puck in the Aurora end and fed a perfect centering pass to Ryan Steane who buried his first Junior A goal and gave the Waxers a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes.

The Waxers upped the lead to 3-0 half way through the game when Kevin Tompkins completed a three-way passing play with Lawne Snyder and Tom Kotsopoulos while on a 5-3 powerplay. The Tigers got one back five minutes later and then Greg Chambers was sent in on a two-on-one by Jason Fraccaro, and using Regan as a decoy, fired a wrist shot between the legs of the keeper and put the Waxers ahead 4-1 after two periods.

Aurora scored first in the third period to halve the Waxers lead before Fraccaro scored his first as a Waxers as Chambers fed him a breakout pass and Fraccaro rifled home a slapshot from the top of the circles. The Waxers completed the scoring when Tompkins bagged his second goal of the game while shorthanded after a nice feed from Kotsopoulos.

Jeremy Wenzel earned the win in net and made some terrific saves when he needed to, turning aside 35 of 37 shots he faced. The victory was the Waxers first win on Aurora home ice in two seasons.
