Markham came into Thornhill to face the Rattlers for the second time this
season after being pasted 10-3 a week earlier at Centennial Arena.
The difference this time was that the Waxers had a nearly full
complement of players and the result was one of the most entertaining
games of the year.
The Waxers jumped on the board first, midway through the opening period
when Chris Petracco
took a pass from Robert
Burrows and drove the net and then drove home his own rebound.
Meanwhile at the other end of the rink Jeremy
Wenzel was putting on a netminder's clinic as he made several
outstanding saves as he turned aside all twenty shots he faced, many of
them coming when the Waxers were shorthanded in the latter stages of the
opening frame.
The Rattlers scored three times in the second period as the Waxers
broke down defensively and allowed the fast skating Rattlers to break into
the clear and challenge Waxers netminder Wenzel, many times with no
defensive support around him and eventually something had to give and the
Rattlers took full advantage to take a 3-1 lead after two.
Markham stormed back in impressive fashion in the final period as they
totally dominated the play from nearly whistle to whistle but the hard
work was offset by some solid goaltending by the Rattler keeper and some
missed opportunities where the puck didn't seem to bounce just right. The
team as a unit was playing as if on a mission but it wasn't to be this
night.
On another positive note, the Waxers received serious netminding this
night, lots more of that to come as Wenzel continues to get comfortable in
the blue and white. He played this night like a goalie who was going to be
the difference, in other words he was going to take the team to victory,
certainly he did his part but he needs to have his 'mates score a few
every now and then.
Overall the Waxers were the dominant team on the ice, especially when
the lapses that occurred in the second period are removed. Nobody likes to
lose, particularly to a rival like Thornhill, however, sometimes the
scoreboard isn't as one might like but if there's such a thing a
"losing well", they did it well this night. No need to hang
heads, a few things to work on maybe, but playing like they did this night
this hockey club will win a lot more than they'll lose.
