The Waxers turned things
around big time, as they completely dominated the Huntsville Wildcats at Centennial Arena
Friday night with an 11-2 victory. Ian Malcolm pointed the Waxers
into the right direction as his forechecking persistence led to a turnover behind the
Wildcat goal which Malcolm promptly slid into the cage surprising the Huntsville netminder
with the wraparound. It was Malcolm's 15th of the year and if there would be an omen for
the Wildcats it would be this one, as it was a shorthanded effort to boot.
A pair of Waxer powerplay goals on point shots from Jimmy Ball that were redirected
past the very busy Wildcat goaltender put Markham up 3-0. The first was deflected by Daniel Sisca with Ball and Rob Mazzuca picking up helpers.
The second was tipped by Ryan Bayliss
with assists going to Ball and Bryan
Lachapelle. Mazzuca would add his 5th of the season from Alex Stoyan with just 7 seconds
left in the period and the Waxers were flying with a 4-0 lead after 20 minutes.
After that beginning frame that saw the Waxers outshoot
the Wildcats 25-5 one might have expected things to slow down a little, not this time as
Huntsville's nightmare was only beginning.
Malcolm scored less than 3 minutes into the 2nd from Brett Barrer followed by a
breakaway goal by Robert Burrows,
his 2nd of the year and before the game was half over it was 6-0 Markham.
Malcolm tapped in a loose puck that was lying in the goal
mouth area after Barrer's shot made it through the netminder but not into the cage to make
it 7-0. Just over a minute later Stoyan fed Sisca with a great breakaway pass and he made
no mistake as he made quick work of the netminder and flipped the disc into the net to
give Markham an 8-0 lead.
After Huntsville finally got on the board late in the
period during a manpower advantage, Locky
Gelinas hammered a slapshot home and the Waxers had a 9-1 lead with still one
complete period left to play. Once again, Huntsville was badly outshot, this time 22-10
(47-15 over two periods).
The Wildcats potted another powerplay goal early in the
third period only to have what ever relief that might have given them erased when
Joel Kitchen spun out in front
and slid home the Waxers' 10th goal of the night. Sisca scored what looked to be his 3rd
of the night, if nothing else the Wildcat netminder earns marks for his quick glove as he
appeared to scoop the puck back, obviously it makes no difference in the "W" but
it would have been two Waxers with HTs on the evening. Kevin Tompkins scored in the
last minute of play to complete the onslaught, Mike
Clarke and Matt Selby earned assists on Tompkins marker.
Mike Lee earned the victory in net for
the Waxers turning aside 24 of 26 Wildcat shots.
The Waxers next game is Sunday as they play the Aurora
Tigers at Centennial Arena.
