WAXERS ARE ALIVE AND WELL The rumour running rampant suggesting the Markham Waxers Junior A Hockey Club will not field a team in the Provincial Junior A Hockey League next season is greatly exaggerated, the Waxers president insisted. The Unionville resident was irate upon getting wind of rumours from different individuals informing him that they heard the club would not operate next season. "Everything will be the same as usual. We're trying to build a contender. The team will be operating next year," Bremner said with assurance. To prove his point, Bremner revealed the Waxers have found one new partner in Chris Frame. A resident of Markham, Frame will take 20 to 25 per cent ownership of the tema, Bremner said. WIth Frame in the picture along with current partners in Brian Ball, Al Ringler and George Duguay, Bremner said 80 per cent of the money required to operate the club next season is firmly in place. Bremner said discussions are currently in the works to add one or two more local individuals to become a part owner or sponsor the team. Ideally, Bremner would like to see another injection of $20,000 before the season starts. Last year, Bremner acknowledged the club ran a deficit between $80,0000 to $85,000. "We're still talking to a couple of other local people who are thinking of joining us in a sponsorship or ownership capacity. Local sponsorship was non-existant last year," he pointed out. While upset with hearing the negative rumours, Bremner understands it's part of the game played by rival teams during the offseason recruiting period, which is now under way.
"I think it's a game. Everybody is trying to recruit the same kids. We're trying to keep Markham kids in our program and they're creating doubts about our operations. Everybody saw the advertisements in the newspaper about us looking for partners. But we'll be full steam ahead." On a separate note, Bremner said the Provincial Junior A Hockey League is expected to undergo a realignment next season with four divisions including the north, south, east and west. The Waxers are expected to be placed in the southern division. He also noted that St. Michael's and Parry Sound are expected to field Tier 2 Junior A hockey clubs in the league.
