WAXERS
MILLENIUM SQUAD READIES FOR BATTLE
Well, it's that time of year again as the OPJAHL season is just around the corner and the Markham Waxers are starting to prepare for the 1999-2000 campaign. The Waxers begin their practices this week after a full summer of tryouts and are looking forward to competing in the newly formed SOUTH Division.
The Millenium Squad boasts a number of new faces but there is a strong nucleus of returning players looking to improve on last year's successes. The returning veterans total 7 forwards, 4 defensemen, and 1 goaltender.
FORWARDS:
Kevin Tompkins and Chris Petracco return for their third year as Waxers. Tompkins is a rugged right winger who will just as often run over some opponents as put the puck in the net. Petracco is a strong two-way player who will look to add some scoring from the left side.
Rob Mazzuca and David
Colucci return to the Waxers for a second season and are the other 2+ years veterans up front. Mazzuca is a versatile left shot who can fill in on defense when needed and is hard to move from the front where his quick release results in numerous goals.
Collucci is a speed demon whose end to end rushes make everyone move to the edge of their seats in excitement. All four of these players will be heavily relied upon for leadership on and off the ice this year. Rounding out things up front will be
Robbie Burrows, Joel Kitchen and
Ben Buxton. Burrows is a deceptively quick right winger who improved in leaps and bounds last year as a rookie and is expected to increase his contributions this season. The same can be said for Kitchen, an OHL Bantam Selection by the Erie Otters, who will certainly use his blazing speed to create many scoring chances for himself and his linemates. Buxton brings an in your face doggedness needed on every team and his touch around the net will give goalies fits as well.
DEFENSE:
Lawne Snyder is the lone defenseman with more than one year Junior experience and will be relied upon heavily this year. Owner of the best shot on the team, he can literally score from anywhere. He also passes the puck extremely well and provides some of the best hip checks in the league each season.
Jimmy Ball is back for his second season and is the youngest of the returning corp at 16 years old. A Bantam Selection of the North Bay Centennials, Ball's overall toughness and hockey ability make him a true threat at either end of the rink and he will certainly be a force to be reckoned with this season. Jim Ulcar and Alex Stoyan also return for their second season and will also contribute heavily to the Waxers fortunes. Ulcar is a smooth skater with a terrific knack for rushing the puck who will look to parlay that in to improved offensive numbers this season. Stoyan is perhaps the toughest and meanest of the bunch who plays very well defensively and always hits the open man with a clean, crisp pass.
GOALTENDER:
BJ Forsythe returns for his second season between the pipes for the Waxers . Forsythe is a tall and quick goalie who likes to challenge the shooter, and because of his 6'4" frame, he doesn't leave them a lot to shoot at when he does. Adept at handling the puck, BJ will also be counted on for his ability to clear the zone himself in many situations throughout the game.
The Waxers are extremely pleased that these veteran players have returned for the upcoming season. The will be counted upon heavily because of their skill, leadership qualities and work ethic. They will be the leaders and role models for the first year players and will have a large say in exactly how well the Waxers fare this season.
