WAXERS OUTPLAY TIGERS BUT LOSE BATTLE OF SCOREBOARD
By Mike Hayakawa [Sports Editor Markham Economist and Sun]
The Markham Waxers felt they had the Aurora Tigers right where they wanted them on Sunday. Playing the Provincial Junior A Hockey League contest at the friendly confines of Centennial Arena, the Waxers appeared to have the upper hand in territorial play. The Waxers also appeared to have the greater scoring opportunities.

But what matters most is the final tally. And that's where the Waxers lost out in a heartbreaking 5-4 overtime decision.

"We didn't get a lot of bounces," conceded Waxers Head Coach Russ Herrington. "It was tough to handle. I felt we outplayed them and deserved to win. I thought our guys worked hard and got good scoring opportunities. But we would hit the post or a shot would go off someone. It didn't work out for them," he added.

Herrington felt his club's fortunes might have been reversed if they received a better netminding on the day from Tom Lawson. Herrington did not blame the loss entirely on Lawson, noting the first-year goalie has given the club more good outings than bad on the season.

"We let in some untimely goals and some soft goals. Unfortunately everybody's due for a bad game."

The Tigers led 2-0 after one period and 3-2 after two before the Waxers rallied to take a 4-3 lead late in the third period.

But the Tigers tied the game with just under four minutes left and won it with 1:43 left in the overtime session.

MALCOLM DELIVERS FIVE GOALS IN WEEKEND ACTION
Ian Malcolm
scored two power-play goals for the Waxers while Rob Burrows and Chris Petracco, on a power-play effort, added singles.

On Friday, the Waxers spared no mercy on the Huntsville Wildcats and skated away with a convincing 11-2 win.

Malcolm recorded the hat trick while Daniel Sisca added two goals for the Waxers, who led 4-0 after one period and 9-1 through two.

Ryan Bayliss, Rob Mazzuca, Burrows, Locky Gelinas, Joel Kitchen and Kevin Tompkins contributed singles.

Herrington was pleased with the effort his club put in noting the loss to the Couchiching Terriers the night before could have devastated his charges.

"It was one of those games where we could have come out flat but we didn't. It was a test of our character to see if they would respond. And I thought it carried over into Sunday's game as well," he said.

Now 13-5-1-2 on the season, the Waxers host the Thornhill Rattlers for the first time this season at Centennial Arena on Friday at 8 pm. The two teams resume play in Thornhill on Saturday at 7:30 pm.
