WAXERS GIVE GOOD EFFORT BUT RESULTS NOT POSITIVE
By Mike Hayakawa [Sports Editor Markham Economist and Sun]
In the estimation of Markham Waxers' Head Coach Russ Herrington, his club played a good game when it took to the ice last Friday for its Provincial Junior A Hockey League contest against the host Aurora Tigers.

Unfortunately for the Waxers, good was not enough as the Tigers defeated Markham 5-3.

After both clubs skated to a 1-1 tie through the opening 20 minutes, the Tigers scored twice within the first nine minutes of the second frame to take the lead for good at 3-1.

It was at this point that Herrington felt the outcome was decided.

The Waxers then made a goaltending change as starter Tom Lawson was pulled in favour of B.J. Forsyth.

The move seemed to light a spark as Kevin Tompkins scored one minute later to cut the Waxers deficit to 3-2.

But the Tigers restored its two-goal margin with a goal just 48 seconds later to take a 4-2 advantage after 40 minutes.

The Tigers struck quickly in the third period with a goal at the 27-second mark to pad the advantage to 5-2.

The Waxers scored the game's final goal with six minutes left in regulation time on a power-play effort by David Colucci, his first since joining the club in a trade last week.

Ryan Bayliss scored the Waxers first goal in the opening period.

"It was actually a good game," said Herrington. "I thought our guys played fairly well. The guys worked hard and battled hard. They put in their scoring chances and we didn't. It was unfortunate."

"We didn't have any luck go our way. But that's no excuse. We certainly gave a good effort but maybe not good enough."

Although the Waxers did not get any bounces their way, Herrington still gave credit to the Tigers.

"They deserved (the win). They worked hard."

The Waxers played the contest without the services of Bryan Lachapelle, who was out with a day-to-day shoulder problem.

The loss to the Tigers was the Waxers' third in four outings against Aurora this season.

On a separate note, the Waxers are looking for someone who might want to fill the role of their mascot, Boomer. Anyone who might be interested should contact Andy Herrington at (416) 717-0406 or (905) 470-2927 during business hours.
