..FROM
THE DESK OF MIKE HAYAKAWA.. According to general manager Larry Herrington, plenty. This was evident when the Provincial Junior A Hockey League club conducted its first-ever charity Teddy Bear toss in last Friday's contest against the Ajax Axemen at Centennial Arena. The event encouraged spectators to bring a stuffed toy and toss it on the ice when Markham scored its first goal. When Waxers' captain Mark Menonte connected at the 5:24-mark of the opening period, a deluge of toys, approximately 250, hit the ice and were collected by a group of minor Waxers' novice players. The toys were given to the Markham-Stouffville Hospital Foundation.
Mr. Herrington said the outpouring of support from those in attendance had exceeded his expectations. Making it even more satisfying, he said, was the relative short advance notice people were given about the inaugural Teddy Bear toss. "This showed that the town is behind this hockey club. It recognizes a worthy cause and I was pleased. We knew this would work." Based on this year's support, Mr. Herrington hopes the bear toss will become an annual pre-Christmas event.
