..FROM
THE DESK OF MIKE HAYAKAWA..
NOVEMBER 18, 2002
You wonąt hear Markham Waxers' head coach
Russ Herrington
complain about taking four out of a possible four points, which his club
did last weekend in its two Provincial Junior A Hockey League contests.
However, in defeating the Thornhill Rattlers 9-2 at Centennial Arena on
Friday and the Pickering Panthers 4-3 on the road Sunday, coach Herrington
would like to see his charges play with a little more intensity.
In Friday's win over the Rattlers, the Waxers trailed 1-0 after one period
before outscoring the opposition 5-1 in the second period to take a
commanding 5-2 lead and adding another four goals in the final frame.
On Sunday, the Waxers jumped out to a 3-0 first-period lead on the
Panthers before the host club rallied in the second period to cut their
deficit to 4-2 and adding one more late in the contest to make the contest
a little too close for comfort.

"You can't do any better point-wise and from that point
of view we accomplished what we wanted," said Herrington of his club,
which occupies second place in the south division standings just one point
behind the Wexford Raiders with a 15-4-4-1 mark. "But we're not satisfied
with the way we did it. We need a better all-round effort mentally and
physically."
Ben Cottreau paced
the Waxers in their win over the Rattlers with four goals while
Tony Rossi,
Ryan Steane,
Mark Menonte and
Pat Porretta added
singles. On Sunday, the Waxers received power-play goals from Menonte,
Steane and Joe Rothwell,
with his first junior A marker.
Liam Bowen added the other
goal.
