JANUARY 31, 2003
With one player eligibility card left open and a
manpower shortage on their blueline, the Markham Waxers signed
Mike Standon to their
Provincial Junior A Hockey League roster on Wednesday. The 6-foot-2,
190-pound 19-year-old Mississauga resident began the season with the
Oakville Blades and was involved in a trade with the Georgetown Raiders.
The deal, however, fell through and Standon elected to leave the team to
concentrate on his studies at McMaster University in Hamilton.

Residing in the same university residence as Waxers'
forward Jason Duffy,
Standon had on-going discussions with him about the team. Upon feeling
comfortable with his academic load, Mr. Standon elected to make a comeback
and skated with the Waxers earlier this week before signing.
"He's a stay-at-home type of defenceman," cited Waxers'
head coach Russ Herrington of his newest addition, who played late last
season with the Vaughan Vipers. "He fits the role of what we needed."
Standon was expected to see action in the Waxers' final three regular
season games, which includes road games tomorrow at St. Michael's and
Monday against the Thornhill Rattlers in Shelburne.
