..FROM
THE DESK OF MIKE HAYAKAWA..
JANUARY 27, 2003
It's been a year of firsts for Markham Waxers' head
coach Russ Herrington. Last week, the Waxers' bench boss coached in his
first Provincial Junior A Hockey League all-star game.
Just recently, Herrington had another first bestowed upon him as he was
selected the south division's Coach of the Year.
"There's a lot of good coaches in our division, but certainly it's quite
an honour," said the fifth-year Waxers' head coach, who earned the award
based on a poll taken by south division conference general managers.
In accepting the award, Herrington felt the honour was a reflection of the
team, which maintained its hold of first place in the south division
standings after recording a pair of wins last weekend over the Thornhill
Rattlers 7-3 on Friday at Centennial Arena and 5-3 against the host Ajax
Axemen on Sunday.
Among those who Herrington gave credit to in earning the award were
general manager Larry Herrington, assistant coaches Mike Heaney, Matt
Gibson and Sean Basilio and the players.
"The honour is a result of everybody else's work including my three
assistant coaches to the general manager who put the team together and
more importantly, the players."
While happy to win the award, Herrington was a bit perturbed when the
selectors denied his players of earning any regular season honours since
the team has been in first place for most of the season and is just a
combination of a win and Wexford Raiders' loss from wrapping up the
regular season title with just three games remaining before the playoffs
begin.

"I thought we had guys deserving of honours, but I
think what it shows is the depth of our club where we have a number of
guys who can step up at any time."
In Friday's win, Tony Rossi
delivered the hat trick for the Waxers, who overcame a 1-0 first-period
deficit with four goals in the second period.
Andy Dias,
Nathaniel Brooks,
Jeff Weiss and
Rainor Gumminy added
singles.
On Sunday, Ben Cottreau
counted two goals while Ryan
Olidis, Weiss and Ryan
Steane rounded out the scoring.
Now 30-10-5-1 on the season, the Waxers will host the North York Rangers
this Friday at 8 p.m. at Centennial Arena and conclude the regular season
with road games Sunday at St. Michaels and Monday against the Thornhill
Rattlers in Shelburne.
