StreetTalk with Mike Hayakawa

..FROM THE DESK OF MIKE HAYAKAWA..
NOVEMBER 8, 2001

A goal by Jason Young with 19 seconds remaining in overtime sparked the
Markham Waxers to a 4-3 win over the host Oshawa Legionaires in Provincial
Junior A Hockey League action Tuesday.
Trailing 2-1 entering the final period, the Waxers tied the game on a goal
by Paul Robinson before the Legionaires regained the lead.
After killing off a penalty with just over 2:30 left in regulation time, the
Waxers pulled their goalie in favour of an extra attacker. The move paid off
as Patrick Diotte scored the game-tying goal with just nine seconds left
which forced overtime.
The win put the Waxers at the .500 mark with a 10-10-1-1 mark in the south
conference.
"It was good to get the two points," said Waxers head coach Russ Herrington,
who felt his club could have given a more consistent effort. "But we didnšt
play overly well. I thought we played a strong first period, an average
second period, a poor third period and a good overtime. We did enough to
win."
In explaining his club's complacency, Herrington felt the cavernous
surroundings of the Oshawa Civic Centre did not lend to a condusive
atmosphere for the players.
"Their rink is big and there are few people at the game and you tend to go to
sleep if you're not careful," he pointed out. "But we showed a lot of
resolve and we made some big plays when we had to."
Derek Doucette accounted for the other Waxers' goal in the first period,
which was even at 1-1.
In an effort to get above the .500 mark, Herrington says his club will have
their work cut out for them as they host the Thornhill Rattlers tomorrow at
8 p.m. and then play at St. Michaelšs this Sunday against the south
conference-leading Buzzers at 7:30 p.m.
