StreetTalk with Mike Hayakawa


Mike Hayakawa has been Sports Editor at the Markham Economist and Sun since January, 1993.

Prior to that he was a sports reporter/outdoors editor and sports editor at the Oshawa-Whitby "This Week Newspaper" since July, 1985.

Born and raised in Toronto, Hayakawa also covered the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) for the Canadian Press news agency for three seasons (1979 to 1982).

The Markham Waxers got a first-hand look of who they will be facing off
against in the first round of their upcoming Provincial Junior A Hockey

If the Markham Waxers had their way, they would know by now who their
upcoming first-round opponent will be when the Provincial Junior A Hockey
League begins postseason action late next week.
However, with five teams battling it out in the leagueıs south conference to
determine who finishes fourth through eighth, a mystery still surrounds the
third-place Waxers as to who they will face off against when the leagueıs

Over the last three Provincial Junior A Hockey League campaigns, the Markham
Waxers have held the upper hand on the Oshawa Legionaires.
As far as Waxers' head coach Russ Herrington recalled, his team had a

The Markham Waxers didnıt make any New Yearıs resolutions when Jan. 1 rolled
But they did begin the 2002 calendar year on a positive note last Friday by
defeating the Vaughan Vipers 4-3 at Centennial Arena.

Perhaps the only good thing that took place for the Markham Waxers last
Friday was that they played their final Provincial Junior A Hockey

DECEMBER 23, 2001
With the Christmas holiday season now in full swing, the Markham Waxers
might have been a little too caught up in the festivities instead of
worrying about two Provincial Junior A Hockey League contests that were
on their agenda just before Christmas Day.
Playing host to the Stouffville Spirit on Dec. 21, the Waxers were
humiliated in front of the Centennial Arena gathering when they
lambasted 11-3. (article)

DECEMBER 21, 2001
Mark Skeeles picked a good time to score his first Provincial Junior A
Hockey League goal.
The first-year member of the Markham Waxers potted what turned out to be the
game-winning goal with just 4:33 remaining in regulation time to propel
Markham to a 4-3 road win over the north conference-leading Newmarket

It wasnıt pretty by any stretch of the imagination.
But the Markham Waxers will gladly accept a pair of victories last weekend
in Provincial Junior A Hockey League action to extend their unbeaten streak
to four games.
Playing host to the North York Rangers on Friday, the Waxers skated off with

While the Markham Waxers didnıt object to enjoying a rare three-day furlough
from their Provincial Junior A Hockey League schedule during the first
weekend of December, the schedulemaker put them back to work in a big way
last weekend.
Playing three contests in what amounted to a  2 1/2-day span, the Waxers

While a tie is better than a loss, the Markham Waxers felt their 3-3
decision against the host Vaughan Vipers in Mondayıs Provincial Junior A
Hockey League contest should have been filed under win column.
By their shot tally, the Waxers peppered Vipers goalkeeper Daniel Bellisimo
with 53 shots. Included in that total were 21 in the third period alone. (article)

Markham Waxers to a 4-3 win over the host Oshawa Legionaires in Provincial

Markham Waxers junior A hockey club has played.

But it was the negatives that ultimately produced their first loss of the

night jitters and some to be too emotionally charged up.
The Markham Waxers could easily have been caught up in the hoopla associated
with the opening of their Provincial Junior A Hockey League regular season
schedule last weekend when they hosted the Pickering Panthers on Friday and
Vaughan Vipers the following night.

Russ Herrington is not hesitant to make one prediction of his Markham Waxers
hockey club when it prepares to take to the Centennial Arena ice for this
Fridayıs Ontario Hockey Association Provincial Junior A Hockey League
regular season opener against the Pickering Panthers at 8 p.m.
And thatıs their ability to put the puck in the oppositionıs net. (article)
