The
West Central All Stars skated away with a convincing 6-2 victory in a contest that
featured excellent goaltending by both teams. To View the players that actually dressed
for the All Star contest you can click here.
There were a few players who were replaced, presumably on very short notice.
Ed McGrane scored from Shawn Baltzer and Stacy
Bauman to break the ice as the West was finally able to solve starting netminder Jamie
Bruno. Waxers' own centre, also team-leading scorer, Ian Malcolm snatched a loose puck
and raced away from everyone as he used his exceptional quickness to break in all alone
and net the tying marker. Malcolm's effort was unassisted. However, the West was able to
take a 2-1 lead into the dressing room on Baltzer's goal from Gini Leone
and McGrane. Bruno turned aside 21 of 23 shots he faced in that opening frame.
The second period was a goaltending show as Waxers' own Tom Lawson turned aside all Western
All Star shots and made several spectacular saves to keep his team in the game. The period
ended up being scoreless and featured the lone penalty of the contest when Matt
Bannan was penalized for roughing after the whistle. Lawson turned aside all 15
shots he faced, several of them were in flurries as the Western squad was pressing.
The third period was all West Central as they outscored the East squad 4-1 in the
period. The lone East goal came off the stick of Mike Nixon with assists
to Ryan Jackman and Rob Martin. West received goals from
Mike Cammalleri who had a pair, Bannon and Randy Dagenais
added singles.
Players of the game from each squad were:
West Central: Mike Cammalleri
East Central: Rob Martin
All said an entertaining affair that threatened to turn into a low-scoring, goalie
dominated contest. EDITOR
