Markham Waxers Game Report

2005 Playoffs - Round 1 vs Pickering

FEB. 19/2005 (Round 1, Game 5) P1 P2 P3 OT FINAL
PICKERING PANTHERS 0 2 1 - 3
MARKHAM WAXERS 0 2 3 - 5

Markham grabbed a strangle hold on the opening round series with their second consecutive victory, this time by a 5-3 score, and have taken a 3-2 lead in the series after 5 games.  Markham was led by two third period goals by Josh Jacobs as the Waxers broke open a 2-2 deadlock in the final 20 minutes.

After a scoreless first period, in which the Waxers out shot the Panthers 8-3, the Waxers scored twice early in the second period to take a 2-0 lead.  Chris Korte got things going with his first of the playoffs, taking a Joel Gaulrapp pass in the Waxer end and then carrying the mail to the Pickering end before burying a high wrist shot.  Just 1:21 later, the Waxers doubled the lead when Nathaniel Brooks fed Daniel Torres a perfect pass on a 2-on-1 for an easy slam dunk goal with 13:16 left in the second.  Pickering would get back to even ground with two powerplay goals in the final 6 minutes of the period.

That set the stage for the Jacobs show in the third period.  On his first, Brett Molnar got the puck up to Riley Hill who passed it on to Jacobs in the neutral zone.  Jacobs drove hard to his forehand side and roofed a perfect wrister for the 4-3 lead.  He scored the eventual game winner on a powerplay with 4:52 left in the game, taking a sweet backdoor pass from Korte for the goal (also assisted by Molnar).  Pickering got an extra attacker powerplay goal with 0:32 left on the clock before the Waxers iced the victory with Joel Gaulrapp intercepting a neutral zone pass and feeding brother James for an empty netter.  Jeff Fischer stopped 27 shots for the victory.
