What started as a close checking game through 40 minutes, erupted in to a shootout in the opening 13 minutes of the final period between the host Stouffville Spirit and visiting Markham Waxers in the final game of the season for the cross-town rivals. Markham was able to fend off the pesky Spirit, who kept coming back throughout the contest before a Brett Molnar goal with 6:29 left on the clock stood up as the winning goal.

Markham surged out of the gate with an impressive first period, outshooting the Spirit by a 19-7 count. Leiland Gauley opened the scoring when he took a cycled puck deep in the Stouffville end and stepped out from behind the net and snuck the puck through the smallest of holes on the short side at the 3:28 mark of the period (Rainor Guminny and Brandon Fackey had assists). Markham upped the lead to 2-0 when David Kostuch took a pass from James Gaulrapp in the Spirit end and danced his way through the maze of bodies, deking the goalie or his 12^th of the season. Stouffville would get one back in each of the first and second to send the game in to the third tied at 2-2.

It didn’t take long for the Waxers to regain the lead as the powerplay clicked just 31 seconds in to the third period when James Gaulrapp finished a pretty three way passing play from brother Joel Gaulrapp and Kostuch for a 3-2 lead. Stouffville tied it up 3-3 a few minutes later and from the ensuing faceoff, James and Kostuch lead their line on a 3-on-2 break and when the puck went to the trailer Joel, he ripped high over the goalie’s glove for the 4-3 lead. The Spirit again tied it on a powerplay which set up the Molnar powerplay marker, a carbon copy of Markham ’s 3^rd goal, with assists to both Gaulrapp brothers.

Jeff Fischer was solid when he needed to be, making 23 stops on the evening.
