Markham Waxers Game Report

SEPT. 14/2004 (Game 4) P1 P2 P3 OT FINAL
COLLINGWOOD BLUES 0 1 2 - 3
MARKHAM WAXERS 2 2 2 - 6

Getting out on the road seemed to be the perfect tonic for what was ailing the Waxers as they earned their first victory of the year, beating the host Collingwood Blues by a 6-3 score.  Trevor O'Neill was solid in net stopping 29 shots en route to his first Jr A victory.

The Waxers scored twice in the first period, both goals coming in special teams situations. Markham opened the scoring on the powerplay when Brandon Fackey fed Brett Molnar down low behind the net and in turn, Molnar found David Kostuch streaking to the net. Kostuch, whose older brother Stefan played three seasons for the Blues, banged home the centering pass for his first Jr A goal at the 10:49 mark of the first.  The Waxers doubled their lead with a short handed goal less than 4 minutes later when the Gaulrapp twins combined for a beauty.  James Gaulrapp caused a turnover at the Waxer blueline and then threaded the needle to find his brother Joel streaking down the far side.  Joel cut in on net, outmuscled the Blues defenseman and then slid the puck home after a nifty deke for his first Jr A goal.  The period ended 2-0.

In the second, Collingwood cut in to the lead with a goal just 2:33 in to the frame.  The Waxers then took over the period completely and dominated the rest of the way, outshooting the Blues 19-6.  Markham got back on the scoreboard with two quick goals, just under 1 minute apart, to make the lead 4-1 and chase the starting goalie from the net.  Shareef Labreche scored his second of the year, banging in a rebound after a Chris Korte rush up the ice was twarted by the Collingwood netminder.  Then, the next shift, Brandon Rubeo finished off a nice three way passing play with David Lyall and James Gaulrapp with a low wrist shot through the screened goaltender at the 14:43 mark to finish the scoring for the period.

The Waxers upped their lead to 5-1 in the opening minute of the third period when Riley Hill scored a power play goal for his second of the season.  Collingwood would get the next two goals to make it 5-3 after 14 minutes of the third period but the Waxers salted away the victory with a goal the next shift.  Derrell Levy started the breakout passing the puck up the ice to Labreche starting a 2-on 1.  Labreche stepped over the line and slapped the puck at the net.  Yiorgo Christodoulou was charging the net from the opposite and wing and was their to tap in the rebound for his first Jr A goal and to put the icing on the cake for the Waxers first victory of the season.
