The 10 game winning streak came to a disappointing
end in Newmarket as the host Hurricanes proved to be poor hosts, capitalizing
on sloppy defensive play by the Waxers en route to a 6-4 victory. The
Hurricanes scored all their goals in groups of 2 in each period, the first
being 6 seconds apart, then 17 seconds apart and finally less than 2 minutes
apart in the third.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first, Markham
would battle back to enter the first intermission tied 2-2 with 2 powerplay
goals of their own. On the first, Josh
Jacobs grabbed a Chris Korte
pass on the halfboards and danced through the middle of the slot before firing
a wrist shot over the blocker of the netminder (Derrell
Levy earned the second assist). The second, saw Riley
Hill get a similar pass from Mick
Ralph, but instead of shooting, he passed to Joel
Gaulrapp in the slot and he beat the goalie high on the glove side with
just 13 seconds left on the clock.
Newmarket again opened up a two goal lead, 4-2,
but the Waxers stormed back scoring two goals in three minutes spread over two
periods. In the dying minute of the second period, Hill and Jacobs
combined on the rush to ultimately set up Brett
Molnar and he danced in and roofed a shot to make it 4-3. Then, in
the opening minutes of the third, the Waxers scored the tying goal when Levy
dropped a pass to Brandon Fackey
and his slapshot snuck through for a powerplay marker. The lead was short
lived however, and even though the Waxers fired 57 shots on net, they left
Newmarket empty handed.
