For the first time since last February, the Waxers
got a chance to avenge a playoff defeat at the hands of St Michael's and the
short staffed Waxers walked out of the Buzzerdome with 2 points behind a 35
save night by goaltender Trevor
O'Neill. Markham won for the 12th time this season and the 8th time
in a row to continue to sit in second place in the tight South Division race.
Playing with only 4 regular defencemen and
starting the game with 2 regular forwards in the stands, the Waxers then lost Riley
Hill to injury early in the game to cut the numbers even more. Bantam
callup Cody Hodgson played well in his OPJAHL debut. After a tentative
start, in which the Buzzers scored a powerplay goal to open the scoring, the
Waxers took control of the game scoring twice in the final 6 minutes to grab a
lead they would not relinquish. The Waxers tied the game while
shorthanded when Brett Molnar
threw the puck up the ice and Brandon
Fackey deflected it around the defenceman and then bore in on net, deking
the goalie for the 1-1 tie. Markham grabbed the lead with 0:36 left on
the clock when Chris Korte kept
the puck in at the St Michael's blueline and Brandon
Rubeo's shot from the boards was redirected in to the net by Joel
Gaulrapp, his first of two on the night.
The second saw the Waxers build on their lead
scoring the only goal of the period. After O'Neill stopped a shorthanded
breakaway by the Buzzers, the Waxers brought the puck right up the ice and
Rubeo found Josh Jacobs streaking thorough
the neutral zone. Jacobs dropped the puck to Nathan
Morris at the top of the circles and Morris squeezed the puck between the
legs of the Buzzers goalie for a 3-1 lead after two periods.
St Michael's controlled the play to open the
third period and put a small scare in the Waxers when the not only fired the
first 8 shots of the period, but scored to make it 3-2 just 4:23 in to the
period. Markham regained their composure, and the two goal lead, minutes
later when Yiorgo
Christodoulou intercepted an errant clearing attempt and snuck in untouched
to roof a wrist shot over the glove for the 4-2 lead. The furious end to
end action continued and the Buzzers looked to make it an exciting finish when
the scored their third goal with 2:12 left on the clock. The Waxers
answered right back, just 50 seconds later as James
Gaulrapp and Rubeo teamed up to spring Joel Gaulrapp on a semi-breakaway
and he made no mistake in salting away the victory with a backhand deke..
