The Waxers and visiting cross-town rival Thornhill
Thunderbirds played their second game of the year and the Waxers have evened
the season series at one win a piece after a solid 4-1 victory in a game that
boiled over in the third period. The Waxers never trailed in this game as
they opened the scoring in the first and then scored twice in the second to
blow it open for good.
In the first period, when the two teams each
fired ten shots on net, the Waxers were the first to capitalize, scoring at the
6:49 mark. After Yiorgo
Christodoulou blocked a shot in the Waxers end, Chris
Korte picked up the puck and head manned it to Joel
Gaulrapp who streaked in on a 2-0 breakaway with Derrell
Levy. As they approached the Thunderbird net, Gaulrapp slid the puck
over to Levy who one-timed the pass in to the net for the 1-0 lead.
Thornhill would tie the game on a powerplay marker later in the first to send
it to the intermission 1-1.
Markham scored the only two goals of the second
period as they out shot Thornhill by a 13-10 margin. Just under 6 minutes
in to the frame, as the Waxers were finishing a penalty kill, Nathan
Morris received a pass from Joel Gaulrapp and then found Brett
Molnar sneaking in behind the Thornhill defence for a breakaway
Molnar made no mistake with his forehand deke to score what would become the
game winning goal. The, with just over 5 minutes left on the clock, the
Waxers capitalized on the powerplay to make the score 3-1 after forty
minutes. After the Thunderbirds iced the puck, goaltender Trevor
O'Neill set the puck for Mick
Ralph behind the net. Ralph skated all the way up the ice and as he
slipped behind the Thunderbirds net, he centered the puck to Josh
Jacobs alone in the slot and Jacobs slammed the puck past the goaltender
for the extra strength goal.
The third period, outside of the shenanigans mid
way through, was controlled by the Waxers who limited Thornhill to 8 shots
while firing 12 of their own at the Thornhill net. Markham upped the lead
to 4-1 with an early powerplay marker, one set up by David
Kostuch's strong forecheck, and finished off when Molnar deflected Ralph's
point shot for his second of the evening. O'Neill was solid, and
spectatcular at times, in stopping 27 shots for the victory, and also picked up
his first Jr A point in the process..
