The third game in a week for the Waxers and the
third straight victory for the Blue and White as they defeated the visiting
Newmarket Hurricanes in an exciting 4-3 game. Markham was on top from the
get go and never trailed in the game, which was made closer by a last minute
goal by the Hurricanes. Excellent goaltending at both ends was marred by
3 goals that were a direct result of poor puckhandling by the tenders leaving
easy, open net goals off turnovers - 1 for Markham and 2 for Newmarket.
The final shots were 43-31 for the Waxers as Trevor
O'Neill earned his 6th victory of the season.
Markham jumped on the board first, scoring two
powerplay goals in the opening 10 minutes. On the first, Josh
Jacobs received a pass from Derrell
Levy and threw it back to the point to Mick
Ralph who would one time a shot on net. The Newmarket goalie stopped
Ralph's shot but Levy was there to bang the rebound in to the open side for his
first of the year. That was followed just under 3 minutes later by the
Waxers first 5-on-3 goal of the season, scored when Nathan
Morris one-timed a Brandon Rubeo
pass past the goalie from the slot (the other assist going to James
Gaulrapp). Newmarket would get one back before the end of the first
as the Waxers took a 2-1 lead in to the first intermission.
In the second, the Waxers were the only team to
score, pouncing on a shorthanded turnover to make it 3-1 entering the final 20
minutes. Levy was the aggressive forechecker on an iced puck that the
Hurricanes goalie shot up the boards past him and right on to the stick of Shareef
Labreche. He made no mistake, pounding the puck through a Hurricane
defender and in to the open net for his 3rd of the season.
In the third, Newmarket opened the closed the
scoring, sandwiching the Waxers game winning goal. After the Hurricanes
made it 3-2 with 9:59 left on the clock, Brett
Molnar scored to regain the Waxers two goal lead with 7:09 left in
regulation. Brandon Fackey
and then David Kostuch did a
terrific job on the wall in the Waxers end to get the puck out and that sprung
Molnar in on the rush. Molnar showed great patience in out waiting the
defence and goaltender and eventually had nothing but the wide open net to
shoot at as he swooped from the left wing side across the slot to the far post
for his first game winner in the OPJAHL. Newmarket made it close with a
goal with 15 seconds left on the clock and pressed in the final seconds but the
Waxers defence stood tall to preserve the victory.
