The Markham Waxers and Wexford Raiders played one of their typical hard fought, and pretty much downright nasty, games to open the 2004-05 season. The Raiders proved to be bad guests however, as they pounced on the Waxers' penalty problems and skated away with a 4-1 victory in the home and season opener.

An extremely tight first period saw Wexford score the only goal, while out shooting the Waxers 10-7, when a centering pass deflected in to the net off a Waxer defender's skate. A scoreless second period, in which the Waxers out shot the Raiders 11-9, set the stage for a somewhat wild third period.

Wexford was able to capitalize on two powerplays before the period was 9 minutes old to take a 3-0 lead. Riley Hill would score the Waxers first of the year with 2:29 left on the clock to give the Waxers some life for a final push in the last two minutes. Playing 4-on-4 hockey, Nathan Morris blocked a Wexford slapshot in the high slot and after the puck off Morris' chest, Josh Jacobs corralled the puck and sent a terrific pass up the middle of the ice to the streaking Hill at the far blueline. Hill accepted the pass while skating backwards, turned and bore in on the net, finally solving the Raiders' goalie with a smooth deke to the backhand. The furious attempts to score any more goals in the dying minutes of the game were thwarted by the Wexford keeper, and the game was sealed with an empty net Raider goal with 22 seconds left in the game. Rob Cundari was solid in the net stopping 24 shots while the Waxers were able to get 29 shots on the Wexford net.
