Finishing off a week long
home-and-home series, the Waxers were able to complete the sweep of the
visiting Ajax Axemen by winning the return match 6-3. Greg van't Hof won his
second straight against his former team stopping 28 shots along the way.
The Waxers opened the
scoring by bagging the only goal in the first period, at the 12:36 mark while
on the powerplay. Nathaniel Brooks let a low point shot go that was
deflected wide by Ryan Olidis and went in to the corner.
Ben Cottreau
chased the puck down, circled out in to the high slot and roofed a hard wrister
for his first of two on the night. The period ended 1-0.
The second was a high
scoring period as the two teams combined for 7 goals to make the score 5-3
after 40 minutes. Markham got the first two goals of the period to
open up a 3-0 lead. First, Andrew Dias and
Stephen Wong cycled the puck
in the Ajax end before Wong centered out in front to Jeff Weiss and Weiss made
no mistake for his 4th of the campaign. That was followed up by a
Cottreau breakaway goal after Darryl Flowers and Olidis combined to spring
Cottreau behind the Axemen defense. Ajax cut the lead to 3-1 before
Derrell Levy corralled a loose puck (after a Cottreau face-off win in the Ajax
end) and stuffed home another powerplay goal to make it 4-1. That was
followed up by B.J. Quinto's first ever Junior A goal on a nice 1-on-1 rush
after Josh Jacobs fed him an outlet pass. Quinto moved one way and shot
back across the grain in mid-move for the Waxers 5th goal midway through the
period. Ajax scored twice over the next 4 minutes to make it 5-3 heading
in to the third.
Olidis and Cottreau
teamed up to finish the scoring, this time Olidis bagging the goal with a bullet
shot of his own off a Cottreau pass on the rush. The Waxers closed the
door in the third period and finished the game outshooting the Axemen 49-31.
