For
their third game in just 2 1/2 days,
the Waxers hit the road for the first (official) time this season as they
travelled to Ajax for the Sunday matinee.
A wild
first period, which saw the Waxers all over the Axemen but unable to solve the
Ajax tender, ended 1-1. It took a while but the Waxers finally found a
way to beat the Axemen goalie while on the power play. Andrew Dias took the
intial shot from the high slot which was saved, Daniel Torres tried his hand on
the rebound but the goalie found it as well, before Jeff Weiss took the puck
and slid it through the sprawling tender for the Waxers first marker. The
Axemen responded quickly before the period ended to set up the tie.
The second
saw no scoreboard change and no real change in the game flow either as the
Waxers continued to be all over the Ajax squad. The third saw the Axemen score
a goal on a strange play of a 2-on-2 rush and suddenly the Waxers were down 2-1
just minutes in to the third. They continued to battle hard and dominate the
play but repeated attempts were knocked aside by the Ajax goalie. Then with
just over 5 minutes left, Joel Lenius corralled the puck in the offensive zone,
fed Derrell Levy in the corner who found
Ben Cottreau in the high slot. Cottreau
made no mistake with the quick release he found the top corner before even the
fans knew what was going on. And that's they way it stayed as the Waxers wanted
to take another shot at this OVERTIME thing.
Well,
they finally figured it out it seems as shortly into the fourth frame, while
the Waxers were shorthanded, Dias caused a turnover and Cottreau iced the puck.
Levy (who was arguably the hardest worker on he ice all night long), used his phenomenal
wheels to get down the ice at the same time as the Ajax defenseman. Levy took
the man and the puck and spun and fired the puck at the net from the corner
just in front of the goal line (NOTE: I was at the other end of the rink but
distinctly heard him call "Bank Shot -- Five hole" so the goal was
legit). And with that, the game and a wild and wooly weekend came to an end.
Goaltender
Greg van't Hof was solid in net facing his former team for the first time and
earning his first victory of the season and in a Markham uniform.
