Game 2 in
2 days saw the Waxers play their second undefeated team in two nights as they
welcomed the Aurora Tigers to the Centennial Arena. An exceptional hockey
followed, lasting just 2 hours and 4 minutes thanks in part to a solid job put
in by the officiating crew.
The Waxers
came out on fire scoring first again this evening just as they had the night
before. In the first, while on the powerplay, Derrell Levy with some hard work
on the board cycled the puck to Ben Cottreau who stepped out from behind the
net and rifled a pass across to Ryan Olidis who tipped the puck home, high over
top of the Tigers netminder. Aurora would tie the game up just 20 seconds later
in the period and the first would end 1-1.
Aurora
came out strong in the second and cashed two goals before the Waxers would
score in the dying seconds of the period while playing 4 on 4. Cottreau won the
offensive zone face off to Andrew Dias who fired a low shot on net, Cottreau
picked up the rebound and fired, grabbed his own rebound and found the back of
the net for his team leading 7th goal of the season.
The game
stayed that way for a long time (well almost all of the third). It was an
excellent back and forth hockey game, with each team delivering hard checks,
creating quality scoring chances, making terrific defensive plays and benefiting
from stellar goaltending. As the final minute wore down, the Waxers rushed up
the ice and goalie Anthony Guadagnolo started for the bench. There was just
with 35 seconds left when a Waxer turnover on the rush resulted in an Aurora
breakaway, and the Tigers sealed the deal with a nice deke around Guadagnolo
and their 4th goal. The Waxers never say die attitude was never more apparent
then when they went to the centre ice draw with 6 skaters. They won the draw
and had a nice chance to score but the Tigers corralled the puck and sent one
into the empty net to take the 5-2 victory home.
