A Tough 3
games in 2 1/2 days weekend started with a match-up versus the Undefeated North
York Rangers. A re-match of Opening night which we all recall ended in an
overtime loss for the Waxers. The Waxers came out still looking for their first
win of the season.
This game
started in a very similar fashion as the Waxers came out all fired up and
scored within the first minute of play. After Daniel Torres corralled a
turnover up the middle in the oppositions end, he fed Nathaniel Brooks who took
a shot which was partially blocked, Jason Duffy was coming through the middle
and picked up the puck taking it the other way, leaving the sprawled goalie
behind and slipped it into the cage. The Waxers would extend their lead later
in the frame as they would connect on the power-play. Darryl Flowers sent
forward a breakout feed to Torres who went in the NY end with Jeff
Weiss, he
laid a nice pass to Weiss who made no mistake as he hit the top corner a split
second later. The Waxers would end up the first period up 2-0.
The second
saw the Rangers mount some early offense as they scored first on a converted
turnover. But the Waxers responded quickly. Josh Jacobs and
Joel Lenius cycled
the puck along the wall and behind the net for a while keeping control of the
puck through sheer hard work. Finally it looked like North York would break out
but Jacobs intercepted the pass banging the puck back to Riley Hill
in the high
slot. Hill made great move by a defender and a quick shot found the top corner
for his first Junior A goal. Then with the Waxers on the power-play again,
after a dump and change from the Rangers, Brooks picked up the puck behind the
Waxer net and took off up the ice. Once at full speed, Brooks weaved through
the Ranger squad, split the D on a great move and sniped one of the prettiest
goals of the year. This time it was the Rangers turn to respond and they did
grabbing their second of the game. But the Waxers were not finished as they
converted on another powerplay. On a nice rush, Andrew Dias found Brooks
streaking to the net, Brooks slid a pass to Duffy who battled hard and fought
of a good stick check to get to the puck and slide it past the goalie of the
post and in. The second ended 5-2 as did the game.
The Waxers
held North York scoreless through the final 20 minutes and shook the monkey off
their backs to earn first win on the year. They played an sound hockey game and
beat a very good team in the process. The goaltending provided by Anthony
Guadagnolo was solid all night and saw Guadagnolo earn his first victory of the
year.
