The North
York Rangers and their veteran laden squad strolled into Markham Centennial
Arena and spoiled the Waxers home opener taking two points home with them.
Thankfully, the Waxers took home one point themselves based on a strong
comeback effort that forced the game in to overtime.
After a
great start, Joel Lenius started a pretty passing play as he fed Nathaniel
Brooks who in turn found Josh Jacobs open near the net. Jacobs would not miss,
scoring his first goal as a Markham Waxer on a hard low shot under the Ranger
netminder. This sent the Waxers to a quick 1-0 start in the first minute of
play. However the Waxers then proceeded to let up and attempted to rest on
their laurels, often in the penalty box, and the Rangers would leave the period
up 3-1 after three powerplay goals.
The second
saw the Waxers again start quickly, again finding the net in less than a
minute. This time Brooks converted on a Jacobs pass by sliding a wrist
shot past the goalie from the side of the net for his first of the season..
Markham and North York would then trade goals as the period progressed. After
North York went up 4-2, Ryan Olidis would pot a power play goal from
Darryl
Flowers and Ben Cottreau drawing the assists. Cottreau tipped Flowers' point
shot off the post and Olidis was there to stuff the rebound home to close the
gap as the teams headed to the dressing room with the score 4-3.
The third
was an excellent period of hockey. Good end to end action saw the Waxers tie up
the game less than 5 minutes in to the frame. Cottreau roofed the puck over
a sprawling goalie after the forecheck of Olidis and Derrell Levy caused a
turnover, which Levy cleverly centered to Cottreau alone in front. From there,
both goalies would play well to ensure overtime.
After
some early play in the North York end end went for naught, a sloppy clearing
attempt proved fatal for the Waxers as the Ranges would score their 3rd
deflection goal of the game to take home the all important extra point.
