Long time rivals Stouffville and Markham faced off for the
first of only two meetings this year at Markham Centennial and the outcome was
a humiliating 5-2 loss to the visitors.
The Waxers struck paydirt first when
Liam Bowen scored from a
sharp angle near the left hand boards, it was the first of several "soft" goals
on the night, unfortunately it wouldn't turn out quite like the blue and white
would like. Ryan Olidis
picked up the lone assist on the score. The lead wouldn't last long though as
Stouffville scored three times in two and half minutes to take a 3-1 advantage
after the first period. If it wasn't the worst period of Waxer hockey in recent
memory it wasn't far from it.
The second period saw the Waxers start out better, taking
advantage of powerplay opportunities to put good pressure and produced some
good chances but nothing good went Markham's way and whenever there was a real
threat the Stouffville tender came up with the saves. Stouffville scored the
lone two goals of the period to make it 5-1.
The third period saw just one goal,
Mark Menonte scored a
powerplay goal, slapping home a loose puck,
Tony Rossi and
Kevin Cribari with the
helpers. Twelve minutes later the contest was mercifully concluded.
Kevin Sit
tended the nets for the Waxers and while he no doubt wishes he could have
another go at two or three of the Stouffville goals, however, the true story is
that the Waxers handed the game away with a royal stinker of a performance and
made life far too easy for the visitors.
Next game for the Waxers is Sunday afternoon when they host the
Couchiching Terriers for the only time this year.
