Saturday night saw the Waxers host the Rangers in their first
meeting of the year. The Rangers took the early lead, scoring just a minute and
a half into the contest before
Pat Porretta scored on a powerplay from
Kevin Cribari and
Ryan Olidis. Two minutes
later the Rangers scored again and took a 2-1 lead into the intermission.
Midway through the second Cribari evened things up again with
an unassisted shorthanded goal. Later with less than five minutes remaining in
the period the Rangers moved ahead again this time on a powerplay goal to put
North York in front 3-2.
Markham finally tied things up again, but not before the two
clubs exchanged scoring chances for over 16 minutes.
Michael Pain's unassisted
goal knotted the score at 3-3. However, the Rangers struck back quickly, with a
powerplay goal just 36 seconds later to take the lead 4-3, now with just over 3
minutes remaining in regulation time. Porretta's second of the night, on a
powerplay from Tony Rossi
and Cribari with just over a minute remaining finished off the scoring.
Overtime continued where regulation play ended, both teams had
multiple outstanding scoring chances, it was perhaps a spectator's delight and
if you had missed this one you'll get no sense of how fast-paced and exciting a
game it was, you just had to be there.
Goaltending was solid for both teams (if it wasn't either side
could have hit double digits),
Anthony Guadagnolo
made his second consecutive start and turned away 41 of 45 shots including
several stops on breakaways.
Next up for Markham is a visit by Oshawa on Friday night (Oct.
4th), game time is 8:00pm.
