The Waxers hit the ice for the second time in less than 24 hours after their
exciting comeback against the Buzzers the previous night to salvage a tie in
the season opener. Joining the Waxers after being acquired earlier in the day
from the Lindsay Muskies was veteran defenseman Jamie Wright. He
benefited from a three-minute briefing from the coaching staff prior to warm-up
and took all of 30-seconds to make all observers take note that the Waxers had
reeled in a "good one".
The opening period was not a showcase of good hockey for the Waxers as they
were often sloppy, particularly in the defensive zone, however, on the
scoreboard the blue and white came out on top when the buzzer sounded.
Michael Pain scored his second in as many nights when he converted a feed
from Mark Menonte for the 1-0 first period lead. Tony Rossi had
the second assist on the goal. Anthony Guadagnolo made his first Junior
A start and acquitted himself well, making several good stops to keep the
Panthers off the board while the Waxers re-focused.
The Panthers tied the contest at 1-1 with a first minute powerplay goal. The
Waxers would regain the lead for good as it turned out at the five minute mark
with a powerplay goal of their own. Liam Bowen hit paydirt (his first
Waxer goal) during a scramble in front of the Panther cage. Ryan Olidis and Ben
Cottreau with the assists. Two minutes later Bowen scored his second of the
night providing the eventual game winner. The winning goal was the result of a
combination of determination and skill as Stephen Wong picked himself up
after being knocked down in the slot, raced behind the Panther cage for the
loose puck, then while fending off a checker he one-handed a perfect feed to
Bowen. Late in the period Cottreau displayed his explosive speed when he broke
away from the Panther defense at the red line, after his initial attempt was
turned away smartly by the Panther tender Cottreau smartly batted home the
rebound. Pain picked up the assist with his feed up the middle that helped
spring the breakaway.
Kevin Cribari scored his second of the year on the powerplay from
Rossi and Menonte to put the contest out of reach at 5-1 at the 8:30 mark.
Later in the period the Panthers got one back to conclude the scoring.
Next up for the Waxers are the Aurora Tigers on Monday night, note the game
time is 7:30pm.
