Home ice advantage continues to play a major role in the South
Division Championship Series as the home teams have won all four games and the
series is deadlocked at 2-2. A terrific hockey game was played in game 4,
and in the end, Markham rode the hot stick of Captain Mark Menonte to victory
as he scored all 4 goals in a 4-2 victory.
The Waxers scored the only goal of the opening period.
Coming off a fairly strange play, Menonte suddenly found himself at the Raiders
blueline, with the puck and with the two defenceman too wide apart to be able
to slow him up. Menonte streaked through the gap between the Raiders and
snapped a shot past the goalie beating him to the blocker side to open the
scoring.
The second period saw each team score a goal and there were
some fantastic saves at both ends. Scott Gray stopped a semi-breakaway
and a 2-on-1 in the period and the Raiders goalie made two terrific glove saves
off Waxer 3-on-2 rushes to keep the game a low scoring affair.
Markham upped their lead to 2-0 when Menonte scored his second of the evening
on a power play. Controlling the puck in the Raider end, Tony Rossi
threaded a perfect pass through the box to Menonte who one-timed in to the net
before the goalie had a chance to react. Wexford crept closer with a
power play marker of their own.
Wexford would tie the game in the opening minutes of the third
to make it 2-2 with just over 15 minutes remaining. Menonte responded
less than 2 minutes later when he rushed yup the ice on a 1-on-2 rush and
blasted a high slapshot in to the net to complete his first ever Junior A hat
trick. Menonte bagged an empty net goal in the final minute of play to
finish the scoring.
Markham played well defensively on the night, providing very
few quality chances to the Raiders. When the mistakes did happen, Gray
was there to hold the fort and stopped 30 shots en route to the victory.
The series now becomes a best 2-of-3 with the final three games to be played
back-to-back-to-back on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.
