FEBRUARY 1, 2002 -
GRADUATION NIGHT
The 2002 Graduating Class will play their
final home regular season game on Friday, February 1, 2002 as the Waxers
host the St. Mike's Buzzers. Five of the players, (Joey Grasso,
Chris Larwence, Matt Neely, Steve Nobili, and B.J. Van Mierlo) are in
their final year of junior eligibility, and the sixth (Jesse Boucher) has
accepted a scholarship for next season. Please come out and help the
Markham Waxers Junior A Hockey Club in honouring these players and their
Junior careers.

It was like the playoffs started early when the
Waxers and Buzzers renewed their rivalry on Graduating Players Night.
There was a little bit of everything in this hard fought, intense match up
which the Buzzers won 7-6 in overtime.
After a pregame ceremony to honour the Waxers'
Graduating Players (see above), the Buzzers did what they could to spoil the
party by jumping out to a 3-1 lead after the first period. The Buzzers
dominated most of the period as the Waxers took a while to get over the jitters
associated with the emotional night. Matt Neely scored the lone goal in
the first period, one timing home a pretty centering pass from Joey Grasso
while on the powerplay at the 9:46 mark of the period.
The second period saw the Buzzers score in the
first minute to go up 4-1 but then the tide shifting substantially towards the
Waxers favour and Markham took over from there. Pat Porretta scored on
the powerplay, one timing a cross ice pass from Neely (who got the puck from
Jesse Boucher) to cut the lead to 4-2. Then, Ryan Steane made a great
deflection up and over the Buzzers' goalie, again on the powerplay, after Derek
Doucette slid the puck over to Neely for the low point shot. The period
ended 4-3 and the Waxers were coming on strong.
The third period was all Waxers as they
peppered 26 shots at the Buzzers' net. After St. Mike's scored on their
first shot of the period to go ahead 5-3, Markham struck for three unanswered
goals in 7 minutes to take the lead with 3:52 left in regulation. Jason
Duffy scored on a powerplay to make the score 5-4, finishing off a three way
passing play started by Doucette and Porretta. Then Travis
O'Rourke,
redirected a Doucette point shot to tie the game at 5-5 with 9:03 left in the
game. Ben Cottreau then scored on a hard wrist to the low glove side to
give the Waxers the lead after Michael Fish had made a nice end to end rush
after receiving the outlet pass from Duffy. St. Mike's scored the tying
goal with the goaltender out of the net, a weird bouncing point shot that hit
at least three different players on the way to the net.
The overtime was more excitement as the Waxers
had 5 shots but could not solve the Buzzers' tender. Typical of hockey,
moments after Boucher was thwarted on a breakaway, the Buzzers came the other
way and an innocent play turned in to the game winning goal, again on a shot
that seemed to deflect it off a pair of shin pads.
