For the first time this season, the Markham
Waxers went in to Vaughan and came away with 2 points on the strength of a 6-4
victory. The victory earned the Waxers a 3-1-1 record against the Vipers
this season and stretched the current winning streak to 4 games.
Vaughan opened the scoring early in the first,
catching the Waxers napping, and creating a 3-on-1 just over 1 minute in to the
game. The Waxers responded halfway through the period while on the
powerplay to tie the game 1-1. Kevin Cribari and Pat Porretta moved the
puck along the wall and then Porretta fed the puck to Derek Doucette at the
blue line. Doucette's low, hard slapper beat the goalie through the legs
for his 15th of the year. Vaughan responded with two goals in the next
1:02 to take a 3-1 lead. Markham struck back while shorthanded to cut the
lead down to one before the period would end. Jesse Boucher was able to
get the puck out of the end and threw it ahead to Cribari. After driving
wide in to the zone, Cribari centered the puck to a diving Boucher and he
chipped the puck in to the net for his first of two on the night.
Boucher tied the score 3-3 in the first minute
of the second period when, after taking a pass from Doucette, waltzed
right down the middle of the ice from the blueline and deked the Vipers goalie
for his 48th goal of the year. Pat Porretta scored the fourth goal with
7:27 left in the period after winning a battle for the loose puck in the
corner, he stepped out, deked around the sprwling defensemen and wristed home
the goal to the short side. Then, on a powerplay with under 4 minutes,
Ryan Steane scored the game winning goal as he stuffed the puck in to the wide
open net, a result of a pretty five way passing play in which Matt Nely and
Cribari earned the assists. Vaughan would score once in the last minute
of the period to make it close going in to the third period.
Doucette bagged his second goal of the night,
the only goal of the third period, with 4:01 left on the clock. Cribari
won the draw right back to Doucette in the offensive end and Doucette did the
rest, dancing in from the point and roofing the puck past the goaltender.
