Markham got back on the winning track on Friday
night taking the first of a home-and-home weekend with the Pickering Panthers,
7-4. Markham controlled the pace of play from the outset and could have
made the final much worse except for a number of posts and missed open nets.
Pickering opened the scoring in the first on a
powerplay at the 8 minute mark. Markham responded just over 2 minutes
later when Mark Menonte and Steve
Nobili combined on a pretty give and go passing play on a2-on-1 that saw
Menonte bag his first goal of the night. The period ended 1-1.
After Pickering took the lead 2-1 early in the
second, the Waxers waited just 1:18 before taking the lead for good. Just
35 seconds after the second Pickering goal, Jesse
Boucher tied the game when he found a rebound lying behind the Panther
goalie (it was there for what seemed like 10 seconds) and tapped it in to the
empty cage. Then, 44 seconds later, while on a powerplay, Boucher fed Derek
Doucette at the point and he dragged the puck along the blue line and
snapped a hard wrist shot at the net. The goalie made the stop but kicked
the rebound right to Kevin
Cribari who slammed the puck home for his first goal of the night and the
3-2 lead. Later in the period the Panthers would tie the game briefly
before the Waxers converted on more powwerplays. The fourth goal was
scored when Cribari deflected home the point shot of Matt Neely who was
found at the blueline by Menonte. The fifth goal was a result of a pretty
passing play started by Doucette and Neely and finished by Menonte, Cribari and
Ben Cottreau. Doucette
moved the puck to Neely who fed Menonte on the half boards. As Menonte
stepped off the wall, he passed the puck behind him to Cribari who then fed
Cottreau with a goal mouth pass for the redirect goal.
In the third period, Menonte upped the lead to
6-3 scoring in the fourth minute of play. Michael
Fish kept the puck in the zone after a pass out from the corner by Boucher,
and threw the puck at the net. Menonte scooped up the rebound and
deposited his second of the night. Pickering cut in to the lead less than
a minute later but Nobili iced the game with a goal with 2:35 left on the
clock. Jason Duffy and
Cottreau executed a perfect 2-on-1 setting up the easy drop pass to the late
coming Nobili who deked the goalie and slid home the backhand for the final
goal of the evening.
Kevin
Sit turned aside 31 shots for the victory.
