The Waxers won for the second straight time in
2002 with a 7-4 victory over the visiting Aurora Tigers in the fourth and final
match-up between the two teams Friday night. For the second
consecutive game the Waxers were powered by two shorthanded goals. Chris
Lawrence stopped 21 shots en route to the victory.
The Waxers came out flying in the first period,
outshooting the Tigers by a 17-7 count. Markham got on the board first
when Kevin Cribari caused a turnover on the forecheck and then fed the puck to
Pat Porretta wide open in front of the net. Porretta made a nice deke to
the backhand and scored his 20th of the year. Then at the 12 minute mark,
Jason Young found Cribari streaking behind the Aurora defense and
Cribari's wrist shot was bobbled by the Tiger goalie and fell in to the net for
a 2-0 lead after the first period.
The second period was all Aurora for the first
7 minutes as they scored 3 goals to take a short lived 3-2 lead. Jesse
Boucher tied the game at 3-3 with a pretty shorthanded goal set up by Derek
Doucette and Mark Menonte with 11 minutes left in the period. Aurora
would go up 4-3, just under 4 minutes later before the Waxers would tie the
game 4-4 after Cribari's stuffed home his own rebound for his second of the
night. Patrick Diotte and Porretta earned assists on the play.
The third period was controlled by the Waxers
as they scored on 3 of their 15 shots while only allowing 7 against. Jason Duffy scored the eventual game winning goal just under 9 minutes in to
the period when he converted on a powerplay for the 5-4 lead. Steve
Nobili and Ben Cottreau earned assists.
Menonte then scored
shorthanded with a bullet wrist shot, high top glove side, for an insurance
marker with just over 10 minutes left in the game. Young sealed the
victory when he, Porretta and Cribari combined on a pretty three way passing
play to find Young alone in front where he roofed the puck under the crossbar
for his 5th of the season.
Newly acquired defenseman Matt Neely made his
debut (for the second time, having played with the Waxers in the 1997-98
season) in the Waxer uniform and made his impact felt immediately, controlling
the pace of play and creating many scoring chances for himself and his
teammates.
