The New Year brought a bit of nostalgia as the
Waxers showed the execution and effort that was missing in the final 3 games of
2001. The Waxers defeated the visiting Vipers 4-3 after holding 3-0 and
4-1 leads. The game was dominated for the most part by the Waxers and the
Vipers made things interesting with 2 powerplay goals in the final half of the
third period.
Markham started strong in the first period
peppering 21 shots at the Viper cage and lead 1-0 at the end of twenty
minutes. Steve Nobili
gave the Waxers the lead after a nice individual effort produced a shorthanded
breakaway which Nobili finished off by sliding the puck through the goalie's
legs for his 6th of the year.
The second period the Waxers continue things as
they jumped out to a 3-0 lead with two goals in the first 7 minutes of the
period. The first of the two goals came just 16 seconds in to the
period. After a quick rush from the opening faceoff resulted in a faceoff
in the Vaughan end, Joey Grasso
won the puck cleanly back to Derek
Doucette at the point. Doucette dragged the puck towards the middle
and then uncorked a vicious slapper for his 12th goal of the campaign. Then,
while on the powerplay, Doucette got the puck from Jesse
Boucher, danced past three Viper penalty killers and then threaded a
perfect pass to Jason Duffy in
the crease. Duffy redirected the puck between the goalie's legs for the
3-0 lead. Vaughan would get one back before the end of the period in
which the Waxers out shot Vaughan 12-10.
The third period saw the Waxers set a season
high with two shorthanded goals in one game when Boucher replicated
Nobili's first period effort and scored on a breakaway of his own to up the
score to 4-1. The Waxers missed some glorious chances down the stretch to
blow the game open and that allowed the pesky Vipers to make a game of it by
closing to 4-3. The Waxers slammed the door shut however, not allowing a
shot on net in the final 2:30 after the Vipers scored their 3rd goal.
Chris Lawrence stopped 28 shots to defeat his
former team in the first meeting since the trade when he and defenseman Greg
Peacock were acquired by the Waxers.
