A slightly better hockey game than Friday
night's affair saw the Waxers earn 5 of 6 points on the weekend with an
overtime victory in Pickering, 3-2.
Jesse Boucher scored the winning
goal, his second goal of the game, at the 2:16 mark of the extra stanza.
The first period ended in a scoreless draw
after the Waxers out shot the Panthers 10-8 in a sloppy 20 minutes. The
second period opened with the Panthers getting on the board first after a poor
clearing attempt ended up back in front to a Panther defender all by himself
for the easy score. Travis O'Rourke would tie the score halfway through
the period when he pounced on a rebound off a Patrick Diotte point shot and
scored his 6th of the year. Boucher picked up the other assist having fed
Diotte the puck at the point.
Markham surged ahead 2-1 just 1:17 in to the third
period on Boucher's first of the night. With the faceoff to the
right of the Panthers net, Mark Menonte won the draw directly to Boucher who
one timed the puck low and off the far post for the short lived lead.
Pickering tied the game 2-2 a little over 2 minutes later.
That set the stage for the overtime when the
Waxers would finally end the contest. After breaking up the Panthers
forecheck the Waxers were able to come out of there zone on a 4-on-1
break. Menonte held on to the puck, faked a slapper, and slid the puck
across to Boucher and the Pickering goale made a terrific save with his
toe. The puck was batted around by Kevin Cribari and
Derek Doucette and
found Boucher again below the goal line. Boucher waited for the Panther
tender to start to get up and then banked the puck in to the net off the
goalie's legs for his team leading 36th goal of the year.
Chris Lawrence was solid in net for the Waxers
stopping 25 shots along the way for the victory.
