There were actually three games played with 65
minutes on Thursday night in Stouffville. The first 25 minutes belonged
solely to the Waxers, the next 25 minutes solely to the Spirit, and the final
15 minutes were played evenly between the two teams. An exciting, intense
affair between these two geographical rivals.
Markham scored all three of their goals in the
first 21 minutes of the game, including 2 powerplay goals. Jesse Boucher
opened the scoring when he received a pass from Bantam call-up Ryan Olidis at
the Spirit blueline and raced in untouched for a beautiful deke and goal.
Eric Kleine picked up the second assist.
Pat Porretta padded the lead on
the powerplay at the 12 minute mark, with assists to Jason Young and
Derek Doucette, when he fired a bullet slapshot over the blocker of the Spirit
goalie. Stouffville would get one back before the period ended.
Boucher scored his second of the night, less
than one minute in to the second. His unassisted marker actually went in
off the Spirit defenseman's skate when Boucher tried to center a pass from the
corner on the powerplay. Stouffville would tie the game before the period
ended.
The third period and overtime proved nothing on
the scoreboard, but showed exactly what type of games to expect in the playoffs
when the intensity is high anfd the goaltenders stand on their heads.
Chris Lawrence was great in net for the Waxers stopping 36 shots to extend his
unbeaten streak with the Waxers to 4 games.
