This viewer raved about the last game these two
teams played...and they simply out did themselves in this, the third meeting
this season between the rivals. A terrific hockey game that was played
and officiated at the highest level saw the Waxers grab two points with a 3-1
victory on the road at Wexford.
An evenly played first period ended scoreless
although both teams had a number of quality scoring chances. As the
middle frame wore on, the Waxers began to take over the game. Pat
Porretta got the Waxers on the board with his first of two beauties on the
night. After Ben Cottreau cyled the puck to Porretta in the corner,
number 23 took it right to the heart of crease, dancing past two defenders and
deking around the poke check of the goaltender, putting the puck in the net at
the same time that he was hopping over the sprawling tender. Wexford
would get that back on a deflection with under 5 minutes left to tie the game
entering the third.
Markham really took over in the third,
controlling the pace, the puck and the physical play for almost the entire 20
minutes. After numerous chances were turned aside by the goaltending of
the Raiders keeper, the Waxers finally broke through scoring twice in the final
4:33 of the game. Porretta scored his second of the night, on assists by
Cottreau and Jason Duffy, when he scorched a quick wrister from the face off
dot past the blocker of the tender. Then, on a powerplay, Derek Doucette
took a pass from Kevin
Cribari, ragged the puck in to the offensive zone
and slipped a pass down the wall to Mark
Menonte. Cutting to the net,
Menonte faked the shot, pulled the puck around the goalie, circled behind the
net and scored on the wrap around in to the yawning cage to seal the win.
Kevin Sit
was stellar in net for the Blue and
White stopping 34 shots capturing his fifth straight victory.
