A fairly wild game that saw the visiting
Hurricnaes score on 2 of their first 3 shots and on their last 2 to secure a
5-4 victory over the Waxers. Markham dominated the play the entire
evening outshooting the 'Canes 45-27 but were stymied by a hot goaltender in
the visitors' crease.
After falling behind 2-0 after less than 2
minutes had passed, Jesse Boucher got the Waxers on the board at the 2:02 mark
to cut the lead in half. Kevin Cribari out raced the Hurricanes defense
on a dump in, poked the puck to Mark Menonte who centered the puck the puck
to Boucher for the one-timer and the Waxers only goal in the first period.
Entering the second down 3-1, the Waxers scored
the only goal of the frame. Again, the line of Boucher, Cribari and
Menonte were responsible for the goal. This time, Cribari fed Boucher on
the rush and he found Menonte all alone streaking down the center of the
ice. Menonte deked the goalie (who happened to fall after catching his
skate in the ice moving side-to-side) and slid the puck in to the wide open
cage for a 3-2 deficit heading in to the third.
The Waxers were all over the Hurricanes in the
third, preventing them from shooting on net for the first 12 minutes of the
period. Joey Grasso tied the game after stuffing home a
Patrick Diotte
rebound just 29 seconds in to the third period. Steve Nobili picked up
the second assist. Then, with just over 8 minutes to play, Ben Cottreau
scored on a four-on-four situation, batting the puck out of mid-air, again on a
goal mouth scramble, for the Waxers only lead. Menonte and Jason Duffy
had assists.
That was all that would go well for the Waxers
as they shot themselves in the foot, taking penalities down the stretch and
providing the win to the 'Canes who scored two PP markers in the fianl 5
minutes.
