The Markham Waxers got back in the win column with
a thrilling come from behind overtime win, 4-3 over Oshawa in their first trip
this season to the Legionaires' home rink. Scoring to tie the game with
8.8 seconds left in regulation, the Waxers took their only lead in the hockey
game with 19 seconds left in overtime on Jason
Young's second overtime game winner of the year.
Oshawa opened the scoring 13 minutes in to the
game for the early 1-0 lead. The Waxers tied the game later in the period
with just over 1 minute left to play. Patrick
Diotte fed the puck to Jesse
Boucher on the rush and Boucher circled back up the boards after crossing
deep in to the Oshawa zone. Boucher waited long enough for Derek
Doucette to jump in the open hole and fed hinm a perfect pass in full
stride. Doucette faked the shot, went around the sliding Oshawa defender
then roofed a wrist shot over the blocker to tie the game.
The second period was scoreless until the final
minute when Oshawa reclaimed the one goal lead. The Waxers would get that
goal back quickly in the second after just 3 minutes had elapsed. Kevin
Cribari cycled the puck in to the corner for Michael
Fish who made a quick centering pass to find Paul
Robinson all alone on the back door play. Robinson tapped the puck
home in to a wide open net to tie the game.
Oshawa regained the lead with a goal on a
4-on-4 situation with just under 4 minutes to play. The Waxers then
killed off a late penalty and with goalie Kevin
Sit pulled for an extra attacker tied the game and sent it to
overtime. The tying goal resulted from a scramble around the net off a
Doucette shot. The puck squirted out to the side and Boucher picked it
up, found Diotte all alone at the point and Diotte fired a high hard slap shot
over the glove of the Legionaires goalie.
Overtime saw the line of Steve
Nobili, Joey Grasso and
Young dominate the play down low in the Oshawa end. Cycling the puck over
and over, Grasso finally moved the puck back to the point to Mark
Mitchell. His low shot on net was stopped but the rebound went right
on the stick of Young who stepped around the goalie on his backhand and slid
the winner home.
It was the second straight win for Sit who
stopped 28 shots for the victory.
