Markham got back in the win column for the first
time in 5 games as they defeated the Ajax Axemen 5-4 in the first meeting
between the two this season. The game saw the Waxers of September
reappear and featured commitment to the game plan and strong execution for the
entire 60 minutes.
Markham struck early in the first when Ryan
Steane scored off a friendly carom just 1:09 in to the contest. The
Waxers extended the lead to 2-0 when Paul
Robinson fed Michael Fish
on a 3-on-2 and Fish buried a wrister for a power play marker. Ajax would
cut the lead in half before the period ended.
After a scoreless second period, the Waxers
regained the two goal lead less than two minutes in to the third. Pat
Porretta won the draw in the offensive end, Jason
Duffy cycled the puck to Robinson who made a pretty behind-the-back pass to
Porretta in front for the 3-1 lead. Ajax would make it 3-2 before the
Waxers struck again, just 49 seconds after the Axemen goal. Jason
Young picked up an errant pass in the neutral zone and slowing the play up
waited for Ben Cottreau to get
open. Young threw the pass across the ice just as Cottreau was tripped
up. Cottreau, sliding on his knees, corralled the puck and deked the
goalie to his backhand in one motion and scored he Waxers fourth goal.
Again, Ajax cut in to the lead and again the Waxers regained the two goal
advantage. This time, with just under 5 minutes left, Fish found Mark
Mitchell in the high slot and his quick wrist shot snuck in for his first
goal of the year and the game winner. Ajax would add their fourth goal
with time running down and the goaltender on the bench.
