In the rematch of Thursday night, the roles were
reversed as the home Waxers defeated the visiting Hurricanes 4-2. David
Digironimo tended the net for the Waxers stopping 29 of 31 shots to earn his
second straight victory for the Waxers. This marked the first time in 3 years
that the Waxers had beat Newmarket on home ice.
The Waxers opened the scoring at the minute
mark on a goal by Ryan Steane.
After cycling the puck down low with Mark
Menonte, Steane took the puck, streaked behind the net and as he stepped
out the other side, snapped a qick wrist shot between the goalie's legs for a
1-0 lead. The Waxers upped the lead to 2-0 on a power play goal minutes later. Derek
Doucette kept the puck in at the blueline and fed Paul
Robinson on the half boards. He made a quick pass through the box to Jason
Duffy who stepped in all alone, faked the shot, and then deked the goalie
to the back hand and slid the puck in to the wide open net.
After Newmaket cut the lead to 2-1 early in the
second, Menonte, Steane and Ben
Cottreau combined to rstore the 2 goal lead. Steane carried the puck down
the ice on a 3-on-1, deking the defenseman before sliding the puck over to
Cottreau in front. He showed great patience, stepping back across the crease as
the goalie slid by and roofed the puck for the goal just before the backchecker
caught him. The Waxers padded their lead when Menonte found Patrick
Diotte alone in the high slot during a power play at the minute. Diotte's
low wrist shot found the back of the net and gave the Waxers a 4-1 lead
entering the third period.
Newmarket scored the lone goal of the period at
the minute mark, the only real scoring chance for either team in the final
twenty minutes.
