The Markham Waxers and Newmarket Hurricanes
started a two night, home and home series in Newmarket Thursday night. The host Hurricanes skated off with a 5-1 victory despite the Waxers holding a
32-22 shot advantage.
The game started with Newmarket scoring the
first goal at the 10 minute mark on a short handed effort. The Waxers would tie
the
game 1-1 just 2 minutes later. Michael Fish received a pass from
Michael Diamond and carried the
puck in to the offensive end on the right wing boards. As he cut to the net,
Fish roofed the puck short side over the shoulder of the Hurricanes' goalie. Travis
O'Rourke picked up the second assist on the goal. The period would end 3-1 after two more Newmarket goals.
The second period was strictly all Waxers but
the Hurricanes were able to pad their lead with 2 goals on five shots. Markham
peppered 19 shots at the Hurricanes net, many of them scoring chances but were
stoned by the tender time and time again.
The third period was rather uneventful, no
scoring by either team.
