The Markham Waxers, on the strength of an OT
winner from Jesse Boucher, took game one of a four game season series from the
visiting Tigers 6-5. Newcomer David Digironimo earned the win in net for
the Waxers stopping 31 shots.
Markham got on the board first just over 3
minutes in to the game when Travis
O'Rourke scored his first Jr A goal. Albert Ferrante
found O'Rourke streaking on the left side in the neutral zone
and O'Rourke did the rest, beating the defenseman wide and cutting hard to the
net stuffing home the puck for the 1-0 lead. Aurora would score twice in
the period to take a 2-1 lead in to the middle period.
Aurora stretched their lead to 3-1 and that
seemed to energize the Waxers who took over the period out shooting the Tigers
21-7. Boucher scored his first of the evening, a power play marker, to
cut the lead to 3-2. Ryan Steane and
Mark Menonte earned assists.
Then, while short handed, Patrick Diotte intercepted a pass in the neutral zone
and started the play back moving the puck quickly to Jason Duffy and then
getting it back. The Aurora defenseman stumbled and Diotte made a quick
pass to Menonte for the 2-on-0. Menonte faked the shot and passed back to
Diotte who slid the puck home for his first of the year. The period ended
3-3.
The Waxers struck early in the third to take the
lead 4-3 with just under 3 minutes elapsed. Menonte and Steve Nobili
cycled the puck down low and when Nobili stepped out of the corner his
centering pass was blocked but the puck went right to the stick of Ben Cottreau.
He made no mistake roofing the puck over the out of position goalie.
Aurora tied the game with 2:04 left on the clock but the Waxers responded 32
seconds later to reclaim the lead. Paul Robinson started the play out of
the Waxer end feeding Duffy on the wing during the rush. Duffy went hard
to the net, dropped the puck to Robinson ad he redirected it to Pat Porretta
who deposited in to the wide open side to recapture the lead. The Tigers
pulled their goalie for an extra attacker and after a bad clearing attempt,
they tied the score with just 3 seconds on the clock.
That set up the overtime heroics of Boucher who
scored just 1:39 in to the fourth period. After winning the draw, Nobili
circled the net and found Boucher wide open in the slot. Boucher's quick
wrister hit the iron and went in to end the game.
The same two teams face off in the Tigers' den
on Sunday afternoon during this all-North Division week for the Waxers.
