The Waxers jumped back in to the win column and
exacted some revenge at the same time as they defeated the visiting Rattlers by
a 5-2 score. A well officiated game in which there were only 7
penalties called, the game was a fast skating high tempo affair.
The first period ended scoreless as the Waxers
out shot the Rattlers 12-8. Thornhill opened the scoring in the second
period catching the Waxers on a bad line change for a 1-0 lead. Markham
struck back with two goals in a span on 2:06 to take the lead. Ben
Cottreau scored the first goal, a short handed effort as he intercepted the
goaltender's clearing pass and buried it in to the net. Then, after some
good forechecking caused a turnover in the high slot, Ryan Steane sent a quick
wrist shot towards the net and Jesse Boucher deflected the puck home for his
team leading 11th goal of the year. Thornhill would tie the score before
the period ended.
The third period ended up being all Markham as
they scored 3 unanswered goals. Mark Menonte scored the game winner just
over two minutes in to the period as he finished off a nice passing play with a
shot to the high glove side. Steane and Derek Doucette picked up
assists. Then with just over four minutes on the clock, Boucher stole the
puck in the neutral zone, raced down the left wing and let go a vicious slapper
to the top corner for his second of the night. The Waxers finished the
scoring with an empty net goal scored by Pat Porretta and assisted by Doucette
and Paul Robinson.
Nick Kemp kicked out 27 shots for the victory.
