College Weekend jitters seemed to hamper the
Waxers in the early going as they allowed the Milton Merchants to jump out to a
3-0 lead after only 20 minutes. The long road back began in the second period
and saw the Waxers score the next 4 goals before late game miscues gave the two
points back to Milton in a 6-4 loss.
Steve Nobili got the ball rolling with his
first of the year, assisted by Jason Young, just under 13 minutes in to the
period when his low shot beat the sprawling Merchants' keeper. Just over 4
minutes later, with the same line on the ice, Young and Nobili combined to set
up Derek Doucette at the point and his big blast sailed over the glove hand of
the goalie and made it a 1 goal deficit entering the third period.
Starting the final stanza on the power play,
the Waxers took advantage and evened the score on Doucette's second of the
night. His wrist shot from the off wing handcuffed the goalie and tied the
score 3-3 less than 2 minutes in. Then, a little over 3 minutes later, a smart
line change sprung fresh legs and Jesse Boucher's forechecking created a
turnover which he fed in front to a trailing Michael Fish. A quick deke to the
backhand left Fish with the empty cage and he made no mistake roofing the puck
for the 4-3 lead. The lead seemed to be the worst thing for the Waxers who
continued to play a reckless style and paid the price. The Merchants were able
to score two goals less than a minute apart, the winning goal coming with 2:41
left on the clock. An empty net goal in the final minute iced the defeat.
